York Students in Schools provides the opportunity for University of York students to volunteer in local schools, from nursery to college. It is a scheme that has been established since 1994, placing 700 students a year in schools in and around York. If your school would like support from student volunteers, we’d love to hear from you!
What’s on offer?
Classroom assistant placements consisting of 8 half-day sessions over a University academic term
Language support – students can sign up to our language support register to support pupils in their native language
Additional requests, for example one off support/events, in-school workshops, or one-to-one assistance
Block placements, of either one week in Easter vacation or two weeks in summer vacation
University of York students are not PGCE students, but self-selected volunteers who have elected to contribute time in a local school. Students may or may not have had previous classroom experience, and should not be left alone in a classroom.
All volunteers are DBS checked to an enhanced level before volunteering in schools. International students who have been resident in the UK for less than a year are also asked to obtain a certificate of good conduct from their home country.
Volunteers receive training from the York Students in Schools team prior to working with young people, covering role expectations and safeguarding, as well as a logbook to support personal development.
Student expenses to schools are covered by York Students in Schools.
Roles are based around University term dates, which differ from school term dates. A high proportion of students leave York and go home during University vacation periods - including Christmas, Easter and the summer.
Roles are flexible to fit around student academic timetables.
Volunteers are matched to opportunities by the York Students in Schools team based on academic and personal interests.
Our volunteering opportunities are available to all current University of York students, ranging from first year undergraduates all the way up to students completing their PhD. We’re proud that our students come from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds.
