International Students and volunteering

Volunteering is a fantastic way of getting to know York, meet new people and build your skills. Each year thousands of students at the University of York volunteer and many of these are international students.

We are here to help you get involved and promote opportunities in schools and communities throughout the year, including one-off volunteering opportunities.

Volunteering and Visas

EU/EEA/Swiss and Eligible for/Holding Pre-settled or Settled Status - you will be able to volunteer.

Student (formerly Tier 4) visa / work with restrictions - you will be able to volunteer. However, if you have a limit on the number of hours you can work, you need to be aware of the UK Visas and Immigration definition of ‘voluntary work’. Any time spent on ‘voluntary work’ will count towards your hours total, whilst any time spent volunteering will not.

Almost all opportunities we have on offer meet the definition of volunteering rather than voluntary work, so would not count towards you hours total. If you’re in any doubt, email us.

Student visitor visa / do not have the right to work - you will be able to volunteer, but not undertake ‘voluntary work.’

For advice on the definitions of work and volunteering please review our information on Work Regulations for International Students
