Information for International Students

Tier 4 Students

Students on a Tier 4 visa cannot be self-employed. If you applied for your Tier 4 immigration permission on or after 6 April 2016, you must not "engage in business activity". For example, if you are not an employee, you must not work for a business in which you have a financial or other significant beneficial interest.

Tier 4 students are welcome to attend our Workshops and Events, but they are unable to receive funding or prizes for their business ideas. International students are welcome to meet with the enterprise officer to find out more about what we offer.

Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur Visa

If you have ‘genuine and credible business ideas and entrepreneurial skills’, it may be possible for you to apply for a Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur visa. This visa enables students to remain in the UK after their studies to work on their business ideas. The university can provide you with a letter of endorsement, as long as the graduate has the requisite investment funds available and has demonstrated their commitment to enterprise while at university.

Before you apply, please make sure you are aware of the eligibility requirements outlined on the website.

In addition to the Visa requirements, you must meet the following criteria to be considered for an endorsement from the University of York:

  • You must have been awarded a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD from the University of York within the past 2 years

  • You must agree to comply with the UK government’s Tier 1 regulations – including regular updates on progress.

  • Have a business idea with significant growth potential.

To apply, you must first register your interest in the scheme. If your proposal meets the University’s criteria, you will be invited to present a business pitch to a panel of university representatives.

Register your interest via Google form.

You must have graduated from the University before we can endorse you, but it is possible to register your interest in the scheme while you are still a student. You can find more information on the UKCISA website, or you can email with any questions.
