Taking time out

grass 2

A gap period after graduation can give you the chance to travel, volunteer, and get work experience. It can be a time of reflection and learning as you meet new challenges. Plan carefully to make sure you can use your experiences to stand out from the crowd when you are applying for jobs.

Be clear about your reasons for taking time out. Key questions include:

  • Why am I taking time out?
  • What do I want to do during the period?
  • How does this fit with my longer term career plans?
  • What advantages will time out give me in the labour market?
  • How much money do I need and how will I raise it?
