Meeting other mature students

The University organises events specifically for mature students to give you the opportunity to meet other students in the same boat.

As an undergraduate student who was/ will be aged 21 or over on the first day of your course, providing you're a first year, you can also access the Step Ahead programme of events organised by the University. These events are designed to help you have the best possible start to University life.

Other events will be organised by your college, your department or one of the University of York Student Union (YUSU) societies you decide to get involved in. The Mature Students’ Association (MSA) and the Family Network are both popular groups among our mature students.

If you want to be up to date with events around the campus, you can follow your college events calendar and YUSU calendar through the timetable. You will also receive regular emails about the different events happening at the University. Give It A Go is another way to meet new people and try various activities.

YUSU and the Mature Students’ Association

The University of York Students' Union, better known as YUSU, is there to help you make the most of your time at university. YUSU represents student views and play a huge part in the vibrant student experience at York both on and off campus.

YUSU is run for, with and by students. It's led by a team of five elected full-time sabbatical officers, who are all York students or recent graduates. They're here to help you share ideas, create change, gain new skills and access support.

YUSU has around 65 sport clubs and over 200 student societies which mature students are welcome to get involved in. Many of these offer taster sessions in the first few weeks of the semester and you can join at any time.

The Mature Students Association (MSA) is a part of YUSU. We are a student-led group for all students over the age of 21.

The MSA represents mature students' interests and runs social events.

Our events range from family-friendly meetups to occasional nights out and more chilled affairs like pub quizzes or board game nights.

We offer an atmosphere of trust and support, where you can feel comfortable and be yourself.

The MSA is a perfect place to meet fellow mature students who often have similar life circumstances and experiences. We constantly work to strengthen our community and make mature students more visible around the campus.
