Getting to York

York is not located near any major transportation hubs, so once you have arrived in the UK you will need to make arrangements to travel to the city from the port of entry which you have chosen. Most national public transport networks will drop you off at York Train Station. The University's page on maps and directions contains more detailed information, as well as a journey planner.

By train

By far the easiest way to get to York is by train, regardless of which point of entry you choose. Most airports or seaports will either have an attached train station or offer a shuttle-bus service to the nearest one. From there you will be able to purchase a ticket to York, though be aware that this may not always be a direct train. If travelling via Eurostar it is necessary only to cross the road from St Pancras International Station to Kings Cross in order to catch a direct train to York.

It is advisable to book train tickets in advance through an online service such as East Coast if you plan to travel a long way (such as from a London airport), as buying tickets on the day of travel can be very expensive. For more detailed information tailored to some specific airports you might be flying into, please see our page on travelling from the airports by rail.

By coach

Coaches run by National Express are usually cheaper than trains, but will take longer to reach their destinations – travel from a London Airport or London Victoria coach station takes between five and ten hours, and costs between £25 and £50. Passengers are permitted up to two suitcases with a maximum weight of 20kg each, as well as one piece of hand luggage.

By private taxi

Taxi services are not recommended due to their high cost; however students may opt to take one from Leeds-Bradford Airport to the University campus. Most services in York will charge around £90 for the trip, you can find a taxi on the website of the Yellow Pages. Ask them to take you to your college. If they do not know where that is, ask them to take you to the Information Centre at Campus Central. Only ever get into a licensed taxi – all licensed taxis will display a plaque somewhere on the vehicle, issued by the city council, and somewhere inside will be the driver’s name and photo ID.

By car

If you plan to drive to York, it is generally advisable to follow signs for Sheffield or Leeds. From London this will mean following the M1 motorway, and Manchester or Liverpool the M62 motorway. Once in or near Leeds, follow signs for either the A64 or York. Follow the A64 until you reach York, and turn off at the Fulford junction with the A19. At this point the roads to the University are signposted as such.

If you wish to use a satellite navigation system, the University’s postcode is YO10 5DD.

Getting from York Station to campus

If you arrive at York railway station on specific days there will be a coach service to help you travel to the University. See more about the Welcome Week programme of events.

By bus

  • Take the number 66 FirstYork bus from the front of the railway station to the University campus. These will be directly in front of you as you exit the station – do not cross the main road.
  • single ticket costs £1.50. Tickets are purchased directly from the driver.
  • Try to provide the exact amount in change, it is not advisable to pay using a large note

By taxi

  • Take a licensed taxi from outside the front of the railway station to the campus
  • A taxi will cost approximately £7.00
  • If the driver does not know where your college is, ask them to take you to the Information Centre on Market Square.

It is recommended that you arrive at campus during the daytime, between the hours of 10am and 5pm. If you are set to arrive in York in the evening after this time, we recommend that you book into a hotel. Arriving outside of these times will mean that there is a chance no-one will be around on campus to help or direct you upon arrival. For more information email international-support@york.ac.uk.
