Module aims

To provide a formal inter-disciplinary structure in which Visual Effects and Sound Design and Film and Television Production Masters students can build upon methods and techniques previously introduced and apply them to projects based on typical industry briefs.

To emphasize the importance of creative and technical collaboration for the effective management of the creative production process in terms of use of time, working with other personnel and problem solving.

To further develop and enhance a range of creative video/audio and editing skills through an understanding of the underlying technical issues relating to professional postproduction.

To develop and encourage professional production values through technical expertise and reflective learning.

Module learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module all students are expected to be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of audio and video production and postproduction processes as they are applied to the creation of professionally produced media programmes in two different contexts:

  • Title Sequence Design through the creation of a 2D motion graphic sequence with associated sound effects and music production
  • Special Effects Integration through the creation of a short narrative video sequence shot on a green screen stage involving the compositing of live action over computer-generated backgrounds and effects combined with a synchronised sound track including Foley and practical effects

Support their creative output with comprehensive and reasoned technical documentation as well as reflective analysis of each finished piece.

Academic and graduate skills

Demonstrate an ability to project manage, organising all required elements in a systematic way and managing time effectively to complete projects to schedule.

Demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Demonstrate an ability to critically reflect on the production and postproduction processes including discussion of both aesthetic and technical aspects of project creation

Demonstrate an ability to write a comprehensive and reasoned technical report detailing all relevant steps in these processes.
