Module aims

The purpose of the Graduate Research Workshop (GRW) is to prepare students for their 80 credit Independent Study Module (ISM), to ensure that students fully understand the expectations of the ISM and develop specific academic skills such as designing and structuring a feasible project, scoping the initial literature search and identifying a solid theoretical foundation. The GRW enables students to practice their presentation and communication skills within an informed but not specialised, on the specific topic, audience with precision, self-reflection and sensitivity.

Subject content

  • While the Graduate Research Workshop does not introduce any new subject-related content, a key aim is to enable students to reflect on the subject content covered in their core and option modules, and to independently apply this knowledge to the development of their ISM proposal.

  • Students will be able to contextualise their dissertation (ISM) research question(s) within the available and relevant literature. Students are expected to consider, and where applicable, review policy stances and strategies of local, national, and global institutions.

Academic and graduate skills

  • planning for an independent literature based research project to manage and schedule appropriate stages of the research process

  • identifying and delimiting an appropriate research topic

  • developing independently policy research design skills and select on appropriate methodologies

  • selecting, reviewing and critically engaging with relevant (theoretical) literature and sources

  • communicating the nature of their dissertation proposals to others

  • presenting, often complex ideas and concepts, in a clear and effective manner using appropriate IT and other visual equipment

  • identifying and addressing ethical issues in relation to research

  • engage with and reflect critically on research policy design

Module feedback

Feedback on formative assessment by the tutor will be returned within one week, either in form of detailed in-text comments on the ISM proposal and/or a direct communication between student and tutor. Students will also receive feedback from their peers, within one week.

Feedback on the summative assessment at the end of the module will be returned within one week.
