Module summary

During year 2 of your programme you will be required to complete placement activity for a minimum of 90 and a maximum of 170 days. This placement activity will enable you to meet PCF 'End of Final Placement' requirements and prepare you for your first job as a qualified social worker.

Module aims

Social Work England suspended any requirement for students to complete a specific number of days in practice as part of the COVID-19 response in 2020. As a result, amendments were made to placement requirements for programme so that, over the course of the two year MA programme, students complete a minimum of 140 and a maximum of 170 placement days. This means that, during year 2 you will undertake placement activities of between 90 and 170 days during which time you will complete all the competencies required for you to qualify as a social worker.


In doing so, your placement experience will be tailored to your needs as far as possible. This might mean any of the following packages of placement activity being offered to you:

1. A single placement of at least 90 days where you will complete all requirements.
2. A combination of shorter placements totalling at least 140 days across a number of placement providers.
3. Either of the above options including the option to 'bank' days from your placement 1 experience in year 1

This option will be subject to approval to ensure your experience meets required levels to practice effectively. 

Module learning outcomes

During the second placement students will acquire ‘professional capabilities’ across 9 ‘domains’ at Qualifying level. Details are at:

Additional assessment information

Students will receive regular 'audit' meetings to ensure they are on track to complete requirements in the timeframes.
Students will receive formal feedback of progress through an interim report that will form the basis for decisions about further placement experience. If a student is placed on 'Action Planning' (concerns raised about progress) they will be unable to move to any other placement activity until they are back on track.

Module feedback

Students receive feedback from their Practice Educator as part of the report writing process. Students are informed about their grade (P/F) within 4 weeks of submission.
