Module aims

This module will introduce you to the key agencies involved in the criminal justice system in terms of their functions and main powers. the module addresses the politics and economics of these agencies and the extent to which they work together as a 'system'. You will learn about the process of criminal justice from the perspective of: offenders, victims and those working within the system.

Module learning outcomes

on completion of the module students will:

  • understand the functions and powers of the agencies that comprise the criminal justice system
  • be able to describe and analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the criminal justice system as it operates in England and Wales
  • Be able to locate and describe information about eh changing legislative landscape of the criminal justice system
  • understand and assess the way the criminal justice system deals with offenders
  • be able to describe and analyse concepts of justice as these apply to the operation of the criminal justice system
  • understand the strengths and weaknesses of different models of punishment
  • be able to apply knowledge about the criminal justice system to a specific example
