Module aims

This module begins by considering how, as children, we learn to recognize printed words through the mapping between sounds and letters, and how, as children and adults, we understand meaning through the mapping between words, grammar, and world knowledge. The module ends with a more detailed look at alternative accounts of cognitive development, and developmental changes in social, and emotional development. With normal development as the back-drop, the module also considers developmental disorders of cognitive function.

Module learning outcomes

  • ·Describe the major theories regarding reading and its development.
  • ·Explain the prevalent view with respect to the underlying causes of dyslexia.
  • ·Define terms such as “ambiguity”, “parsing”, and “syntax”, and explain their significance for theories of language understanding
  • ·Evaluate alternative accounts of cognitive development.
  • ·Trace the development of self-recognition, emotional attachment, and social interaction during infancy and toddlerhood.
