Module aims

The aim of this module is to understand how the human brain mediates higher mental functions such as attention, language, memory and action. The module will explore what we can learn about normal psychological processes using different methods in cognitive neuroscience. Finally, it will examine how populations of neurons act together to represent the world and control behaviour.

Module learning outcomes

• understand how psychological processing can be affected by brain damage
• give an account of the effects of attention on sensory processing
• describe how language and memory can be explored in neural terms
• provide an overview of principles underlying action and decision
• discuss the importance of neural representations in behaviour

Module content

In Year 2 the aim is to understand how the human brain mediates higher mental functions such as attention, language, memory and action. The marks on all assessed work will be provided on e-vision.

Students will meet supervisors in wk 6 in AuT, SpT and wk 9 in SuT to discuss their marks.
