Module aims

This module aims to build on the techniques developed in Project 1 in order to produce a more sophisticated project showing critical, reflective and informed practice in relation to the students individual and ensemble music making, composition or research. These elements are taught largely through individual tutorials and/or vocal or instrumental lessons; the class-based elements of the module teaching help students work towards an understanding of the knowledge/creativity balance, an ability to reflect self-critically and a more nuanced way of articulating these factors.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students should be able to

Knowledge and understanding

1) access an increasing range of written and sounding materials and other research tools as appropriate to their areas of interest;

2) use those tools to research new areas of interest;

3) explore in detail both previous and current work relevant to their new or expanded research areas;

4) apply to their research findings a larger range of critical tools drawn from performance studies, composition, musicology, analysis and related disciplines as appropriate;

5) contextualize and critically assess their findings in increasingly sophisticated ways;

6) articulate those findings in increasingly sophisticated ways through performance, composition or writing;

7) continue to develop a knowledge of texts and compositions to widen experience of the field in which they are working

Discipline related learning outcomes

1) produce work (compositions, performances, essays) showing increasingly sophisticated and original ideas through creative and academic exploration;

2) develop those ideas by continuing to study the processes of compositions, performances and academic writing and learning to apply them to their own work;

3) through the development of vocal, instrumental, compositional or academic writing technique, continue to increase stamina in performance, writing or composition.
