This module will study the effect of music on health and well-being within education and the wider community, together with specific skills that practitioners need when working in these settings.

Module aims

This module will study the effect of music on health and well-being within education and the wider community, together with specific skills that practitioners need when working in these settings.  Areas of study will include creative music-making within mainstream and SEN schools, how people communicate in different contexts, music and dementia and ageing communities, music in hospitals, together with an introduction to music therapy.

By the end of this module students will have:

  • acquired an understanding of music education and the role of visiting artists in school
  • acquired an understanding of the role of the arts in health and therapy
  • explored and developed a range of teaching and workshop skills appropriate to the above contexts

  • developed research techniques appropriate to these disciplines
