Module aims

The aim of the module is to develop students' understanding of communications strategies in adult nursing settings. It will also extend their skills to enable them to communicate safely and effectively with clients, groups and other health professionals in more challenging and complex situations. This will also include communication technologies used in the practice setting.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate that they can communicate with empathy and compassion in situations where the client is distressed, has difficulties with health and well-being, is facing death or experiencing bereavement and loss in order to promote optimal well-being and manage personal safety.
  2. Discuss the client's right be actively involved and to contribute to decisions about their own care and treatment taking account of their ongoing intellectual, physical and emotional needs.
  3. Examine and apply conflict resolution techniques to ensure the best outcomes when the views and choices of individuals, teams and family members compete or conflict.
  4. Apply principles of education to improve clients, families and carers understanding of their condition while promoting health and providing equal access.
  5. Identify and use a range of communication technologies to support person-centred care and inter-professional working to enhance the quality and safety of healthcare.
  6. Recognise and avoid threats to professional boundaries in complex situations.

Module feedback

  • Formative feedback from the facilitators and sim-patient will be offered, which can be used to develop the summative essay.
  • Written feedback for summative assessment is provided on the standard proforma, within the timescale specified in the programme handbook.
