Module aims

The aim of this module is to build upon the students learning in stage 2 and advance their knowledge in the care of children and young people with complex and/or life threatening conditions. The student will explore in greater depth pathophysiology and pharmacology as it applies to more complex or life-threatening situations for the children or young people in their care. They will develop their knowledge and understanding of Immediate Paediatric Life Support (IPLS) and Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) and explore the skills involved. This module will also explore the care of children and young people who are technologically dependent and the support they require. Similarly the student will explore palliative care and dying in children and young people and the nurse's role in caring for them and their families. The module also aims to develop the students understanding of operational management issues when dealing with the care of children and young people

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

  1. Integrate their knowledge and understanding of pathophysiology with development of skills in IPLS and APLS.
  2. Develop an insight into the lives of children or young people who are technologically dependent across a range of complexity.
  3. Appraise the palliative care needs of children, young people and their families, and demonstrate an understanding of the role of the children's nurse in the care of a dying child or young person.
  4. Manage operational issues that may arise in nursing children or young people and demonstrate understanding of associated procedures and policies.
  5. Develop insight into the role of the nurse in safeguarding children and young people.
