Module aims

This module aims to help students explore how key legal, ethical and philosophical principles combine to inform nursing care. It seeks to help students consider how philosophical principles inform practice judgements and guides them to explore the ethical and legal implications of their nursing actions. Students will draw on their Ethical Way of Knowing (Carper 1978) alongside knowledge gained in related field specific modules to gain a critical understanding of the key legal, ethical and philosophical principles underpinning autonomous nursing practice in order to consolidate their understanding of contemporary healthcare. The student will also explore their personal philosophy of nursing and the associated legal, ethical and philosophical rationale.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  1. Critically explore their personal virtues alongside the core ethical and legal frameworks relevant to practice with particular regard for practice guidelines, professional regulations and personal conduct.
  2. Critically analyse the legal, ethical and philosophical frameworks related to the process of ethical nursing decision making and partnerships in practice.
  3. Critically apply ethical theory and nursing philosophy to nursing practice.
  4. Consider their personal philosophy in relation to the metaparadigm for nursing and critically reflect on the tensions between the legal, ethical and philosophical perspectives.
