Module summary

This module will introduce students to the foundational knowledge of the nursing profession and developing oneself as as a student of nursing. It will explore concepts around evidence for practice, aspects of nursing philosophy related to personal development as a nurse. It will also consider the concept of care and person centredness as well as the professional responsibilities of a nurse. Overall the aim is to guide the student as they develop their identity in becoming a registered nurse.

Module aims

Develop foundational knowledge of the nursing profession and oneself as a student of nursing.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

  1. Identify aspects of nursing philosophy relating to your own development as a student of nursing.
  2. Describe the concept of care and person centeredness.
  3. Reflect on your own life experience and your emerging development as a student of nursing.
  4. Recognise the role of different types of evidence to inform nursing practice.
  5. Recognise professional responsibilities of a nurse from a range of perspectives.

Module content

Uncertainty, paradigms, research methods, evidence (searching skills), reflection, philosophy of nursing (self, professional, identity), care (person centeredness), resilience, health and wellbeing (self), responsibility (safety & risk) Diversity & cultural competence.

Emotional Intelligence, Self-awareness, types of evidence, reflection, nursing process (assessment), Self as a leaner, Professional standards, Documentation/accurate record keeping.
