The module aims to allow first level registered Nurses, registered Midwives, and registered AHPs (Physiotherapists, Radiographers and Chiropodists/Podiatrists) to acquire the competencies for Independent (Nurses, Midwives Physiotherapists and Chiropodists/Podiatrists) and Supplementary (Nurses, Midwives and AHPs) prescribing.
Synopsis of Module:
Course content is based on the original Department of Health (2006) guidance and learning outcomes together with competency frameworks produced by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (2016). There is an emphasis on the application of the principles of prescribing in practice. The module is mapped to the learning outcomes published by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
The course includes 12 x 7.5 hour days' (6.5 hours excluding breaks) supervised learning in practice under the guidance of a designated medical mentor.
Achieving 80% attendance is a requirement of the programme and attendance is formally recorded at all teaching sessions. Satisfactory attendance will be verified by the Module Leader or a member of the programme team in the portfolio of evidence.

With reference to pathophysiology and the use of common diagnostic aids the student will critically evaluate their assessment and consultation skills and their ability to take an accurate history and perform a comprehensive problem-focused age-appropriate clinical/physical examination.
