Module aims

  • Introduce professional midwifery practice.
  • Develop an understanding of maternity care, with a focus on normality during the antenatal period.
  • Develop and apply foundational knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to childbearing, with a focus on the antenatal period.
  • Apply underpinning biological knowledge to develop generic and midwifery-focused clinical skills.
  • Introduce evidence based midwifery knowledge to underpin understanding of clinical practice.

Module learning outcomes

This module will enable the student to:

  1. Identify the role, responsibilities and sphere of practice of a midwife and student midwife.
  2. Describe the role of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  3. Identify organisational structure and key underpinning principles of the United Kingdom health services and maternity services.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of the evidence based practice process and related terminology.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of sources of evidence and the application of evidence in midwifery practice.
  6. Identify hazards to client and/or professional safety and take necessary actions to minimise the impact of risk.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology of selected body systems and understand the changes in physiology that occur prior to pregnancy and in pregnancy.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of normal fetal development.
  9. Describe holistic maternity and midwifery care for women experiencing normal pregnancy.
  10. Perform clinical skills to assess well-being during pregnancy.
  11. Identify standards to support infant feeding as set out in the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) UK.
