Module summary

This module consists of tutorial-based discussions around key papers in Environmental Geography. The assessment consists of an oral presentation and submission of short answer questions on the tutorial papers. Members of staff (with Environmental Geography expertise) in the Environment Department will discuss, with small groups of students, topical publications that cover broad contemporary geographical issues, such as sea level change, environmental hazards and ice sheets. There will be a one hour lecture on how to give an oral presentation.

Module aims

This module will provide students with an understanding of key physical geography concepts and contemporary geographical issues (sea level change, climate change, natural hazards, glaciers, biogeography etc.) that are important today within Environmental Geography. The module will also provide an introduction to some of the keys areas of Environmental Geography that will feed into the more specialised options in year 2. Each tutorial topic will be discussed in some detail, with a member of staff that has expertise in that area. As well as increasing understanding of environmental issues, students will get a chance to think about a series of Environmental Geography problems in a wider context. Key skills training will be provided for oral presentations.

Module feedback

Feedback on the participation and contribution will be formative and continuous throughout the module. Feedback to the students for the presentation and short answer questions will be provided within four weeks of submission and detailed on a feedback form and annotation on the scripts for the short answers.
