Module aims

·The aim of this course is to explore literary and visual representations of London in the period between 1750-1850, with reference to other cities.

Module learning outcomes

Subject content

A knowledge of a range of texts addressing the city from the middle of the eighteenth century through the middle of the nineteenth century;

An awareness of some of the key concerns and debates about the city as presented in literary and visual accounts;

A sense of how and why writers invented new genres and reworked existing genres to represent the city in this period.

Academic and graduate skills

An ability to bring disparate works into dialogue with one another

Essay planning and writing skills

Oral communication skills through participation in seminar discussion
