Module aims

  • to introduce students to a range of critical methods and approaches to a large-scale literary text
  • to enable students to develop skills in close reading, writing and argumentation in relation to that text
  • to consider the historical, cultural, social and political specificity of artistic contexts shaping that work

Module learning outcomes

  • Awareness of a range of critical tools and approaches to literature
  • An understanding of the significance of historical perspectives in the interpretation of literary texts
  • Knowledge and understanding of precise critical terminology and concepts
  • Methods of approaching the particular demands of large scale works.
