Module summary

Personal effectiveness will consist of staff, research students and guest speakers sharing accessible themes with the aim to improve personal development and professional potential among students. Presentation skills, advanced use of Word/Excel, research strategies, interviewing skills, self-marketing for boosting employability, poster design and production, body language, negotiation and leadership skills, reflective practice, teamwork, conflict management and ethics are some of the core areas that will be covered.

Masterclasses consist of staff, research students and guests sharing accessible but forward-looking cross-disciplinary themes in their areas; one of which you will follow up and develop your own detailed study.

Students will also engage with an e-learning log making weekly entries throughout Autumn and Spring term. The objective of using this log is to help students explore their own thinking and learning, evaluate their progress towards defined goals and career aspirations and engage critically with the programme content and application of the taught theories, concepts and models to the real world.

Module aims

Subject content aims:

  • To expose students to a wide range of generic management and technical skills that will be useful in everyday working situations.
  • To encourage discussion and practice in the use of these skills throughout the MSc course.
  • To improve transferable skills development in students and prepare them for industry roles
  • To allow students to experience several cross-disciplinary subject areas related to engineering and technology management
  • To develop the student’s skills in writing up a research study in one of the subject areas

Module content

There will be 18 lectures as part of the Personal Effectiveness split during Autumn and Spring term. 9 sessions in Autumn and 9 in Spring. Each interactive session will address a specific skills building theme. As part of the e-learning log during Autumn and Spring term, students will be required to complete reflective exercises based on the Personal Effectiveness workshops on a weekly basis in the log.

Module feedback

'Feedback’ at a university level can be understood as any part of the learning process which is designed to guide your progress through your degree programme.  We aim to help you reflect on your own learning and help you feel more clear about your progress through clarifying what is expected of you in both formative and summative assessments.

The Department of Electronic Engineering aims to provide some form of feedback on all formative and summative assessments that are carried out during the degree programme.  In general, feedback on any written work/assignments undertaken will be sufficient so as to indicate the nature of the changes needed in order to improve the work.  Students are provided with their examination results within 20 working days of the end of any given examination period.  The Department will also endeavour to return all coursework feedback within 20 working days of the submission deadline.  The Department would normally expect to adhere to the times given, however, it is possible that exceptional circumstances may delay feedback.  The Department will endeavour to keep such delays to a minimum.  Please note that any marks released are subject to ratification by the Board of Examiners and Senate.  Meetings at the start/end of each term provide you with an opportunity to discuss and reflect with your supervisor on your overall performance to date.
