Module aims

The critical evaluation project considers the state of the art relating to one aspect of System Safety Engineering. The student should determine the gaps in this state of the art via a literature review. The student should also demonstrate how to go from this critical evaluation to an outline proposal for the design and evaluation elements required to address at least one of these gaps.

  • Collation of critical review into thematic presentation to indicate state of the art
  • Developing an outline design and evaluation proposal based on the critical evaluation

Specifically, the student should be able to do the following.


  • Demonstrate that they have acquired appropriate knowledge of literature and existing specialist knowledge in a particular part of the subject area that build on taught theory and practice of safety. Examined in the overall project report.
  • Demonstrate that they have engaged in research and critical understanding of advanced scholarship in their chosen area. Examined in the project report.
  • Formulate a moderate sized problem in the chosen area; select and justify an appropriate approach to that pro blem. Examined in the proposal chapters of the project, in which the student uses their research to identify a specific substantive (eg. development) project or "further work".
  • Prepare a written report on the work done, according to the defined criteria, aiming for a standard that would be acceptable for wider publication. In particular, the student should be able to prepare a report the structure and presentation of which is uncontentious, and in which the referencing is of publishable academic standard. The report must demonstrate critical abilities and evaluation of work done and methods applied. Examined in the presentation aspect of the report mark.

Module feedback

Individual written feedback is provided via the online feedback system. There will also be formative comments on the research proposal on which the final project for the programme will based.
