This module aims to enable students to contribute effectively to the debate in the field through examining the last 66 million years of Yorkshire geology, during the Cenozoic era.
The module aims to:
- Discuss the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of northern England
- Analyse the evidence for Cenozoic igneous activity preserved in northern England and its regional implications
- Interrogate the evidence for glacial and interglacial periods in the Northern Hemisphere
- Describe the evolution of the northern English landscape, with a particular focus on the changing palaeoenvironments of the last 2 million years
- Introduce students to key localities for understanding the Cenozoic history of Yorkshire and northern England, and their regional/global significance.
Module learning outcomes
By the conclusion of the module the student should be able to:
- Understand the tectonic, igneous and environmental actions that have produced the present day landscapes of northern England
- Analyse and interpret the effect that glacial and interglacial periods have had on different regions and rock types within Yorkshire and northern England
- Synthesise the skills and knowledge acquired in previous modules, particularly the Advanced Palaeoenvironmental Analysis module
- Make judgments on interpretations of Cenozoic geology, informed by explicit, appropriate and critical use of a variety of approaches.
