Module aims

The purpose of this module is to give a solid grounding in the Mesozoic geology of Yorkshire and northern England at postgraduate level, in a similar fashion to the previous (Palaeozoic) module.

The module aims to:

  • Introduce the Mesozoic Era of geological time in the context of the geology of Northern England;
  • Introduce students to the variety of Mesozoic rock types present in Yorkshire, and their limited exposure elsewhere in northern England;
  • Assess the Mesozoic geology of Yorkshire and northern England, focussing particularly on the origins and structure of the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Coast;
  • Show how the Mesozoic rocks of Yorkshire preserve evidence of a wide variety of ancient depositional environments, from organic-rich, offshore muds to meandering river systems.

Module learning outcomes

By the conclusion of the module the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the changing Mesozoic palaeoenvironments of Yorkshire and northern England, and the global events and mechanisms that drove these changes
  • Describe and interpret key Mesozoic rock and fossil types, and an understanding of their use in reconstructing palaeoenvironments
  • Make judgments, through the practice of interpretation and analysis, on the global importance of the Mesozoic rocks of northern England and the role they have played in our understanding of the evolution of the Earth.
