Module aims

This module considers the lifestyles of modern hunter-gatherers and what can, or cant, be concluded about past hunter-gatherers from modern ethnographic analogies. The module takes an historical perspective on approaches to hunter-gatherer lifestyles, moving from early concepts to The Original Affluent Society model to current approaches and encourages a critical approach to perceptions and interpretations. A series of archaeological examples from Palaeolithic and Mesolithic societies are discussed.

  • To provide an understanding of the nature of hunter-gatherer lifestyles, the historical development of attitudes to hunter-gatherers and how studies of hunter-gatherers can contribute to interpretations of past societies.
