Paul Johnson is the Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies. He is also currently a columnist for the Times and a member of the Climate Change Committee. He is a visiting professor at University College London.

Paul's work focuses on the economics of public policy. Previous roles have included Chief Economist at the Department for Education and Director of Public Spending at HM Treasury, where he also served as Deputy Head of the Government Economic Service. He was a Member of the Economic and Social Research Council from 2002-2007. 

Paul has led reviews for Government on pensions, inflation measurement and tax devolution. He is an author of books on tax, pensions, and inequality. His next book, Follow the Money, which looks at how Government raises taxes and spends on the welfare state, will be published in February 2023.

Paul was appointed CBE in 2018.
