Got a new device for Christmas?

Posted on 1 January 2023

If you got a new computer, tablet, mobile phone or games console, find out how to make the most of it and get it working with our services.

Get connected

Whether you want to use wifi or the wired network, if you're on campus, or working elsewhere, find out how to connect your new device:

If you've got a new games console, you need to register it for the mydevices network (available both over wifi and through the wired network) to connect it to the internet in your study bedroom:

Specific smart devices can also connect to the mydevices network, although some features may be limited. Personal printers and some smart home accessories (smart bulbs, smart plugs, etc) will not work on the University campus network.

Two-factor authentication

If you've got a new phone, make sure it's set up for two-factor authentication (2FA).

Top tip! It's best to make sure that your two-factor authentication is working on your new phone before you reset/wipe your old phone.

Further information and troubleshooting guidance on 2FA can be found on our website:

Printing

You can print to the University printers from computers, tablets and smartphones. Follow our setup guides to add the PrintCloud to your device:

You don’t need to bring a printer with you, as printers are available across campus via our York Print Plus service.

But if you do decide to bring your own, you won’t be able to connect it to the campus wifi or wired network. You’ll need to connect it directly to your computer using a USB cable (most printers include one of these in the box) and make sure the printer’s wireless functionality is switched off.

Zoom

You can download and install Zoom following the links on the Zoom website:

Make sure you sign in to the Zoom app correctly (using the “SSO” option) by follow these instructions:

Software

You can get lots of different software packages for your own computer either free or at a discount.

The University has subscribed to Office 365 to provide you with a free copy of the MS Office suite:

There's a range of other software available to you too, including EndNote, SPSS and MATLAB. Find out what you can install, and how, at:
