Problem-based learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) has been commonly described as a student-centred pedagogy which engages learners in problem solving as a way of developing their knowledge and understanding (Costello, Brunner & Hasty, 2002; Hmelo-Silver, 2004): learning is derived as an outcome of the work involved in tackling and resolving the problem (Barrows & Tamblyn, 1980), involving an act of cognitive construction by the learner (Schmidt, 1994).
