Facilitating active learning

This session will provide participants with an overview of the learning theories which support a more active approach to learning. 


The session will share the experiences of colleagues and students from the Department of Chemistry and York Management School in delivering and participating in active learning sessions.  The following examples will be included in the session:

  • The use of podcasts for flipped sessions;
  • Microteaching;
  • Use of the environment;
  • Involvement of student representatives;
  • Use of electronic voting systems in the form of clickers to facilitate peer instruction;
  • Student produced videos; and
  • Short activities in traditional lectures.

Participants will be given time to share their experiences and to consider how they might incorporate a wider variety of active learning approaches in their sessions.
