Carers

Carers provide unpaid, regular help to someone close to them who may be suffering from fragility, physical or mental illness, an addiction or may have a disability.

Carers can help in many ways, with either personal care (washing, bathing, dressing, feeding), medication, cooking, shopping, housework and / or giving emotional support.

A large number of carers do not recognise themselves as carers. They can be any age. A carer could be a parent, grandparent, child, partner, friend or neighbour who is doing whatever needs to be done to help maintain the quality of life for someone close to them. They often do not realise that support is available to them.

The University of York is dedicated to helping provide support to our staff members who provide care for their loved ones. This support could be the ability to work flexibly, taking emergency leave or special leave.
