Research Development Fund (RDF)

The RDF is used to provide matching support for:

  • one-off funding opportunities from UKRI and other funders, including bids for equipment;
  • CDT bids and other types of PGR-funding;
  • other exceptional and innovative opportunities for acquisition of robust capital funding to support research activity.

Key factors for a successful bid:

  • more than one applicant, usually involving more than one department
  • inter-Faculty bids encouraged
  • clear alignment to Departmental and University Research Strategies
  • request for a minimum matching budget of £100,000 usually required
  • departmental contribution desirable but not essential

Applications that are eligible for University Research Priming will not be funded via the RDF route. For eligibility to the University Research Priming, please contact the Research Development team at

It is unlikely that more than 6 proposals (depending on their size) would be successful in any one financial year.

How to apply

In the first instance, potential applicants should discuss their proposal with their Faculty Dean/Associate Dean for Research and/or the Dean of the York Graduate Research School.

With their support, applicants should complete the RDF application form (below), and submit this to

Application form - Research Development Fund (MS Word , 13kb)

Further information may be requested before consideration of the final application by the PVC-R, appropriate Dean/Associate Dean and the DVC/VC.

Successful applications

Funding for successful internal bids will be allocated within the RDF budget, with a spending deadline aligned to the expected outcome of the external funding proposal.

If the external funding is awarded, the agreed internal costs will be charged to the centrally-held RDF budget.

If the external application is unsuccessful, the internal allocation will be removed from the RDF budget.
