Karen provides strategic direction for the Research Excellence Training (RET) provision at the University of York. Working to support the University's Research Strategy, RET co-ordinates and delivers training for doctoral students, early career researchers, doctoral supervisors and Principal Investigators, and professional support staff aligned to research. Responsibilities include:

  • Co-ordination of the University's Concordat and 'HR Excellence in Research' process
  • Oversight of all training and public engagement activities for researchers
  • Co-delivery of the Times Higher Award-winning 'Research Leaders' programme for academic staff and PIs
  • Co-ordination of the early career researcher pilot mentoring scheme
  • Supporting the implementation of the Research Strategy and York Graduate Research School activity
  • Developing partnerships nationally and internationally to further enhance the support available to researchers

Karen has a PhD in Education, has published widely on assessment and is a trained coach and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Jane is responsible for training and development provision in the areas of researcher responsibility, the PhD process, Post Graduates Who Teach (PGWT) and research communication. She also helps support researchers with networking in their department and across disciplines. 

 

Helen Goodwill

Helen provides operational support to the RET team's activities and provides advice and guidance to staff and research students on the training and support available. She is also administrator to the York Learning and Teaching Award (YLTA) programme.

Helga supports researchers' professional and career development and research management through workshops and individual consultation. She also provides training in knowedge transfer and public engagement (PE) and organises PE events.
