Mental Health Awareness Week events

Mental Health Awareness Week runs from Monday 14 to Sunday 20 May.

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week there is a series of events for staff to attend including taster sessions on resilience, mindfulness and mental health first aid and a talk by 1st Year student Bethany McLaine about her own experiences with mental health.

Meet the University’s Mental Health First Contact Network, Monday 14 May, 12.30pm to 2.00pm, Island of Interaction in the Ron Cooke Hub

Drop in and join members of the University of York Mental Health First Contact Network for a tea or coffee and find out what they do and how they help staff.

Mindfulness taster session, Tuesday 15 May, 1.00pm to 2.00pm, SLB/002 - fully booked

The Northern Centre for Mindfulness and Compassion and York Mindfuless-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) will deliver the hour-long mindfulness taster session for staff. Places are limited, book to attend.

Samaritans talk about their drop in sessions, Tuesday 15 May, 4.00pm to 5.00pm, ATB/042

York Samaritans will deliver a talk about their campus drop in sessions and how staff can look after their own mental health. Book your free ticket to attend.

Resilience taster session, Wednesday 16 May, 12.30pm to 1.30pm, HG/17

Ever wondered what resilience is? Andy Holladay from Human Resources will give an overview of the resilience training, discuss what resilience is and share three tips to improve your own resilience. Book to attend.

1st Year student talk about their own experiences with mental health, Wednesday 16 May, 5.00pm to 6.00pm, AEW/003

First year nursing student Bethany McLaine will talk about her own experiences with mental health and how it inspired her to study mental health nursing. She'll talk about the stigma and how it affected her study and will go on to talk about how she looks after her mental wellbeing at University. Book to attend.

Mental health first aid training taster session, Thursday 17 May, 2.00pm to 3.00pm, SLB/004

Find out how mental health first aid can give you the life skills to deal effectively with people who might be in distress or need support with their mental health and wellbeing. Book to attend.

Mental health awareness and wellbeing group seminar, Thursday 17 May, 4.00pm to 5.00pm, ATB/042

The team from York and Selby IAPT will be presenting a slideshow with information about what types of therapy they provide and talking about common mental health issues and how prevalent it is.
They will also present a section of the first session of their Wellbeing course which most people that enters into the service attends. Read more information about the event and book to attend.

Mental health case studies, Friday 18 May, 12.30pm to 1.30pm, RCH/017

During this session, departments will share the impact and benefits of mental health first aid training. Book to attend.

Take part in a York Sport class for just £1

During Mental Health Awareness week York Sport will be offering a staff members the chance to attend any class at the York Sport Centre on Campus West for just £1. Just take along your staff card to redeem the offer. Check out the timetable for more information about their classes.
