How we can help

Click an item in the list for a brief summary.

Accepting and processing gifts

  • It is very important that gifts are accepted using the right account codes and work orders, so that the full gift stays ringfenced to you and appears in University reports.
  • We can advise on this, and can ensure Gift Aid is claimed to increase the value of your gifts.
  • A Gift Agreement is needed for any gift over £5,000 – we can arrange this.
  • Contact Vicky Patteson, Funds Officer to discuss.

  • We ‘steward’ (acknowledge and thank) all donors using personal letters and updates on how their giving helps.
  • We hold thank-you events, publish a donor magazine and e-newsletter and manage giving circles (clubs for all regular or major givers).
  • For larger donors, we work with departments on a bespoke stewardship plan
  • Contact Emily Jones, Supporter Relations Manager to discuss.

  • YuStart is the official University-supported crowdfunding platform for students and staff.
  • YuFund gives grants to projects run by students and staff, funded by gifts from alumni and friends.
  • The Big Alumni Project makes a £40,000 grant from alumni gifts every 2 years.
  • Please get in touch to discuss your other fundraising needs.
  • Contact Tom Piercy, Head of Fundraising Programmes to discuss.

Scholarships and bursaries

  • There is a directory of all support available to students here: Finance – Scholarships and Bursaries.
  • We support you with management of scholarships and bursaries funded by donations.
  • Our support includes preparing agreements with both the donor and the student recipient, creating end-of-year reports and stewarding (thanking and acknowledging) the donor.
  • Contact Emily Jones, Supporter Relations Manager to discuss.

Giving in a will

  • We can meet with and provide specialist advice to ‘planned givers’ (those who pledge a gift in their will).
  • Planned gifts of any size are valuable, and may form part of wider giving arrangements by the donor.
  • ‘Unrestricted’ gifts (which can be used for any purpose) are especially valuable.
  • Planned givers are members of the Heslington Circle and receive other exclusive benefits.
  • Contact Kalli Keramari, Philanthropy Officer to discuss.

Giving in memory or celebration

  • We have three tribute packages that create a lasting memorial to alumni and staff members.
  • We can advise on how best to remember a colleague or student and can facilitate staff and alumni’s giving toward this.
  • Contact Tom Piercy, Head of Fundraising Programmes to discuss.

What we do

We fundraise and offer specialist advice to departments, colleges and student groups, and support their YuStart projects.

We run regular telethons (‘YuCall’) and direct mail and email campaigns, raising money YuFund, scholarships and other projects.

We also facilitate giving in wills or in tribute/memorial.

A key part of our work with donors is ‘stewardship’ – acknowledging and thanking them for supporting the University.
