Brief biography

I undertook the Masters in Social Work here at the University of York, graduating in 2013. My dissertation investigated social workers' attitudes towards the self-disclosure of practitioners' sexual orientation when working with service users. Before that I worked for 15 years in the voluntary sector in a variety of projects in North and West Yorkshire, Manchester, and Cornwall, which included: sexual health promotion and community development with men who have sex with men; working with young people at risk on the streets; working with young people involved in selling sex; and various community development and project management roles, usually focused to some extent on marginalised communities.

My PhD research took a multiple methods approach to investigate perceptions of the helpfulness of mental health practitioners sharing their mental health and other experiences and identities with service users.

I am a research associate, currently working on the SCENE social intervention for people with psychosis (

I am also an associate lecturer teaching on the BA Social Work programme, and on the Think Ahead social work training programme.
