Constructing a gendered welfare typology of six East Asian societies

Thesis summary

The thesis will attempt to construct a gendered welfare typology and explore the nexus of the state, market, family and community in welfare provision concerning childcare and elderly care among six East Asian societies (China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan). And this will be attained by seeking answers to proposed research questions, including how to construct a new welfare typology based on a gender productive and protective fuzzy-set ideal type analytical framework; similarities and differences of respective and relative roles of these care-giving sectors; the development of interrelationship of these sectors; how to redefine their roles and corresponding feasible policy options for changes and so on.
