Dr Kevin Caraher and Dr Enrico Reuter have guest-edited a special issue of the Journal for Poverty and Social Justice on the topic of ‘Self-employment and social protection in Europe’, published this month.
With the rise of self-employment in the aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2008, notably in the UK, this special issue offers a timely exploration of the different facets of self-employment and the often problematic gaps in social protection available to the self-employed.
The eight articles analyse case studies from across Europe, and hence allow for a broader comparative view on the nature of self-employment, in particular in its more vulnerable forms. The selection includes an article by the two academics on the impact of Universal Credit on the self-employed in the UK.
The introduction to the special issue, written by Dr Caraher and Dr Reuter and including a brief summary of all articles, is freely available.
