Sleep-out for SASH

News | Posted on Monday 8 April 2019

More than 100 people slept rough in York recently and raised over £17,000 for a youth homelessness charity.

Jade Ward from the Department of Social Policy and Social Work took part in the annual SASH sleep-out, which took place in York on Friday 5th. April, along with over 100 other volunteers who sheltered in cardboard boxes for the night.

Safe And Sound Homes (SASH) is a registered charity preventing homelessness in young people aged 16 to 25 throughout York, North Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire and Hull. The charity provides Nightstop and Supported Lodgings schemes across the region and helps over 300 young people avoid homelessness every year. When young people are facing homelessness, SASH can offer a spare room in the home of a trained volunteer and support to move forward.

Fortunately for all the volunteers the night stayed dry, although the temperature dropped to 2 degrees Celsius in the early hours of the morning.

Jade Ward said, "I really enjoyed the evening, and it was great to see and meet so many new people. It really hit me to experience what it must be like to stay on the streets, I wouldn't want any young person to face sleeping-out and I'm so glad I took part and raised vital funds for this amazing charity."
