Sociology with Criminology, Year 2

Amelia is currently spending the second year of her three-year course studying abroad in the USA. The combination of studying both Sociology and Criminology through a joint- degree is proving through-provoking.

"The criminological aspect of sociology is really exciting to me and I highly recommend the study of these two subjects together. I’m interested in understanding the world around us and the way in which it shapes our existence and the course has given me the opportunity to look at exciting and thought-provoking areas such as why crime occurs and why only some of us commit serious crimes and others do not.

I am currently studying abroad at the University of Illinois at Urban-Champaign, USA. My highlight has probably been experiencing a completely different culture with new people and new opinions. It’s really great having the opportunity to take classes that would not be available at home. I have become particularly interested in the study of technology and the impacts of such development on the world around us, and am hoping to take a class in Forensic Science next semester.

It was initially hard to leave my friends and life behind in York for a year, but I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about studying abroad – and I know I have a great group of friends to return to when I come back for my final year."
