Volunteer guidelines

Alumni volunteers are an important and valued resource in advancing the aims and objectives of the University of York. The University recognises the crucial role volunteers play in engaging and inspiring current students through sharing knowledge and experience. In return support and resources are available from colleagues in the Office of Philanthropic Partnerships and Alumni, and Careers and Placements.

Volunteers are asked to read the following guidelines about responsibilities connected to representing the University of York through York Profiles & Mentors.

  1. Interaction with students
    1. If concerns arise during the mentoring relationship, volunteer mentors are expected to liaise with a contact in Careers and Placements or the Office of Philanthropic Partnerships and Alumni immediately.
    2. Volunteers should endeavour to uphold the University’s good name and reputation at all times.
    3. Act as a role model of good and appropriate behaviour understanding the difference between friendliness and familiarity; bearing in mind that someone else might misinterpret your actions, no matter how well intentioned.
  2. Use of data, in compliance with the Data Protection Act
    1. Any personal data received must not be divulged or sold on in any way, and must not be used for any other purpose than fulfilling your role as a volunteer on York Profiles & Mentors.
