Graduate Trainee Programme (Qualified Teacher Status)
Where I hope to be in 5 years
As I am currently course leader, progression would lead me into departmental leadership. I would also be keen to develop pastoral roles within the education system, such as roles within sixth form, and enrichment teams.
My advice to students considering work
Make sure you look into yoru options, and what is available to you. You don't have to stick with what you have studied in your degree, there are lots of options.
What I do
I am course leader for BTEC National DIploma in Health and Social Care, BTEC First Diploma in HEalth and Social Care, and Society, Health and Development Advanced Diploma, which are offered to students aged 16-19. As well as delivering units to students across all three qualifications, mr role also involves assessment of coursework, and internal verification of other coursework from units delivered by other tutors. My course leadership role invovles interviewing of prospective students, enrolment of students, monitoring and tracking of students, and contact with parents. It also involves all necessary paper work relating to the three courses, and awarding bodies. I am also personal tutor on the three courses, and this involved delivering the college enrichment programme, and meeting regularly with each student on a one to one basis, to discuss achievement, attendance and any outstanding issues. I also teach on the society, health and development higher diploma, which is offered to students aged 14-16 from local schools.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Sociology degree and Qualified Teacher Status.
Degree skills:
Since graduating, I have gone on to teach sociology at A Level. Many aspects of my degree also covered health and social care, and I then went on to teach GCSE, A level, BTEC First Diploma and BTEC National Diploma Health and Social Care. My degree has been invaluable, and has directly helped me in my teaching role. SKills such as time management are also invaluable.
What I like most
The job is extremely rewarding, particularly when students achieve. I am also teaching a subject that I love, and therefore I get a lot of satisfaction out of passing on my love for the subject.
What I like least
There is a lot of paperwork involved, which is a hidden aspect of the job. Dealing with challenging students is also difficult, as is dealing with the large work load of planning lessons and assessing work.
