A day in the life of a Civil Service Fast Streamer in the United Kingdom

Fast Stream has given me the chance to try out a variety of roles in different departments

How I looked for work

I began to consider my career at the beginning of my final year at York. I began with the Times Top 100 graduate recruitments and researched the ones that interested me - which led me to the Civil Service Fast Stream.

How I found out about the job

Recruitment event

The recruitment process

The process involves several stages and has adapted since I went through the process, the current process is:
- Situational judgement and behavioural questionnaires
- e-tray assessment
- video strengths exercise
- Assessment centre

The opportunity to apply runs from the end of September to the end of November.

My career history

I joined the Civil Service straight from university. Prior to this I had worked part time in a supermarket and had some work experience in the financial sector.

What I do

I am on the Generalist stream on the Civil Service Fast Stream which gives me the opportunity to try out a variety of roles in different departments. I have been a policy adviser at both HMRC and DWP and now working on a regeneration project for Haringey Council.

I have developed a range of skills through the variety of different postings
- Writing skills - developing policy documents and written briefings for Ministers
- Communication skills - Ministerial briefings and the delivery of presentations
- Leadership skills - taking responsibility for specific projects
- Collaboration skills - working with internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver legislation

What I like most

The chance to have a real influence over government policies and the opportunity to get a breadth of experience across different departments.

What surprised me most

The positive focus on development across the civil service and the vast amount of training opportunities
