A day in the life of a Generalist Fast Stream in the United Kingdom

Moving between Government departments to develop skills

How I looked for work

I went to the careers fair in my final year and looked at the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers (there were copies in the Careers office).

How I found out about the job

York Careers Fair

The recruitment process

The recruitment process is changing this year, but for me there were a series of online tests (including verbal and numerical reasoning, situational judgement and inbox simulation) followed by a day long assessment centre with interview, group exercise, leadership exercise and writing task.

My career goals when I graduated

To have a job I enjoyed that would make a difference.

My career history

During University I worked at a shop during holidays and as a student fundraiser for the alumni telethon during term time.
I missed out on the application window for graduate schemes in my final year of Uni (who knew they closed in November?!) so fell in to working at a local recruitment agency in my home town while I applied for the following year. I started the Fast Stream in September 2015.

What I do

On the Fast Stream I get to move between Government Departments and experience different roles to develop my skills and find out what I enjoy most. I have been a policy adviser in the Department of Health, a project manager in the Department for Education and now I'm in the second year of the scheme working as a contract manager for a small Non-Departmental Public Body.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Every role has developed different skills, including:
- Writing skills through writing briefings for ministers and Board reports
- Communication skills from giving verbal briefings, speaking to senior colleagues and giving presentations
- Leadership skills through managing individual projects
- Time management and how to juggle multiple deadlines or requests
- Working as part of a team and how to collaborate with others to achieve my goals

What I like most

The opportunity to try different roles and learn new skills, before deciding what direction I want my career to take.

What surprised me most

How many people are genuinely interested in helping me to progress and develop.
