A day in the life of a Digital Marketing Assistant in the United Kingdom

I started as a summer intern and never left!

How I looked for work

After I completed my year in France during my degree, I was looking for work experience over the summer. I was considering marketing post-degree, so I emailed a few companies in York to see if they'd offer me any experience. Luckily, the University offered me a 3-month internship - and I never left! I worked part-time throughout my final year and moved into my current role after I graduated.

How I found out about the job

Speculative application

My career goals when I graduated

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, but I didn't fancy the long application processes and competition for graduate schemes and knew I wanted to stay in York for at least another year. I considered a PGCE or TeachFirst but I felt I wanted to gain other experience and become a bit older and wiser before turning to teaching! I had enjoyed my internship and part-time work with the University Communications office and decided to continue in that area.

What has helped my career to progress

Asking questions and taking on new responsibilities which in turn opened other doors!

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I hope to continue my work here and potentially move into a role which involves more outreach and direct communication with students. Eventually, I'd like to go into primary teaching with a focus on how to foster language learning in primary schools!

My advice to students considering work

If you don't feel the grad schemes are for you - don't worry. It might feel that all the work is for big companies in London, but there are plenty of jobs elsewhere. Just keep your eyes peeled and ask around - the more people you talk to, the more likely you'll find out about an opportunity. Also, don't worry if you don't know what you want to do. Any job you do will give you useful experience in some respect, and sometimes you need a bit of time and experience of working to realise what it is you are actually interested in.

What I do

I'm a Digital Marketing Assistant at the University of York. I work between Student Recruitment and Communications, and my role looks at how we can encourage offer-holders to choose York over other universities. This involves planning and carrying communications campaigns, managing a team of student bloggers and running online events, amongst other things.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Through my role, I have developed good communications skills, as I liaise with lots of different members of the University. I've also learned how to project-manage, keep to deadlines and how to organise my time effectively. Probably most importantly, I am continuously learning how to develop effective marketing skills and how to convey the University's story to others.

What I like most

I like that I can be creative and suggest new ideas which I'm able to implement and develop - I'm constantly learning and gaining valuable experience.

What I like least

The slow process of learning what everybody is responsible for and who to contact for what situations - going to the wrong people makes it more time consuming for everyone!

What surprised me most

How much responsibility I was given very early on, and how much I enjoy rising to the challenge and testing myself.
