A day in the life of a HR Generalist - Talent Acquisition in the United Kingdom

Make sure you tailor every application

How I looked for work

Look locally and apply with a focus. You need to remember that all online systems are designed to reduce the number of applications through strict searches. Make sure you tailor every application.

How I found out about the job

Online jobs board

The recruitment process

Getting in the door is 90%. The rest is down to being able to present yourself well in an interview - I went for plenty of practice interviews to build confidence.

Online application, followed by 2 face to face interviews with a panel. Both interviews had pre-work and a presentation element involved.

My career goals when I graduated

Financially I had a bet with housemates that we would celebrate the 1st one of us to reach 40K without London weighting.

I wanted a role that was going to progress my skills and keep me challenged.

My career history

I worked full time while at York as a Delivery Manager at Next
Summer jobs with an Accountancy firm
HR Graduate at BorgWarner following York, moving to HR Generalist and then Talent Acquisition globally.

What has helped my career to progress

Drive for results and flexibility. Always take the opportunity when presented, focusing on short term goals sometimes hides the big picture.

My advice to students considering work

Remember the job market is now global. Think outside of your comfort zone and build up your experience - graduates with no work experience don´t make it to the top of the pile.

My advice about working in my industry

Drive for results and innovative thinking

What I do

Following 4 years at York, I started a HR career at the automotive supplier BorgWarner. I have been at BorgWarner for 5 years as a HR Generalist, most recently spending 18th months as the lead for global talent acquisition.

In October 2016, I joined Hunter Wolff based in Saltaire as Director, Talent Acquisition.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Demonstrating practical application of academic knowledge
Ability to network and build relationships at all levels
Attention to detail
Drive for Results

What I like most

I am lucky in my role to meet a lot of people from all over the world, and in many cases travel to these places as well.

What surprised me most

The academic knowledge is fantastic but you have to apply practically, I learned a lot from day 1 about doing this.
