A day in the life of a Film and art consulting intern in the United States

How I looked for work

Searching for international work experience throws up many opportunities, be sure to research organisations and individuals thoroughly before and after applying to places.

How I found out about the job

The recruitment process

I applied for this position in the winter, sending in my CV and short essay/cover letter and a link to my website. I was then given a list of questions which I had to answer and video record until finally I got to the interview stage which was a skype interview. Out of five hundred applicants only four of us were chosen - then came the tricky bit of acquiring a visa. This took a long time and is most definitely worth keeping on top of. It is quite a commitment as this involves trips to embassies and lots of questions.

My advice to students considering work

Try and find out as much as possible about what you will be doing day to day, if this sounds like something achievable, challenging and engaging, only then is it worth considering.

What I do

During this internship I went through training for running a small-scale film production company, distribution, learnt about effective business marketing across a range of platforms as well as good practice and ethics in the business environment.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Communication and self-confidence were definitely the main skills I developed during this internship. Learning how to stand up for yourself and your own ideas are essential to not only learning from your mistakes, but not allowing others to exploit you.

What I like most

Moving to a new continent completely on your own is a pretty daunting experience, but getting through it and proving to yourself is totally worth it. What's more, New York is a great place to experience such diverse culture.
