International graduate on the KTP scheme - a great way to start your career in the UK

Finding work in the UK

Being a non-European student, it can be tricky to find a job if you don’t have work experience or time in hand. With PhDs, you will get one year after your PhD to stay back and search for a job which should turn fruitful.

Job consultants often go for easy money and avoid students without a working permit. So, the best thing to do is to apply on company websites directly; cutting the middle men.

The recruitment process

The interview process was quite standard. Online application; followed by a face to face interview a month later. As part of the interview, I also had to do a 10-minute presentation on my background and explain how my skills would match their requirements.

How my visa affected the recruitment process

A lot of small companies are unaware of how straightforward applying for a visa sponsorship is. I was unaware of this as well until a company who offered me a position asked me to look it up and let them know. Well established companies would have established processes to hire non-Europeans and those are the ones to look for.

My current employer did not have any problem sponsoring a Tier 2 work visa and hence the switch from Tier 4 student visa to Tier 2 visa was easy and fast.

My advice to students considering work

York Career office provides a lot of support in refining CVs and more importantly covering letters. They will even help you tailor both for every single job application you make and please make the most out of it.

My advice about working in my industry

KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) scheme is a good place to start your career. It’s mid-way between an academic career and industrial one and hence you can get a taste of both. As a result, in future you can take either career paths without issues.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Technical aspect of my job deals with micro-controllers which I don’t have a lot of experience in. My experience is with FPGAs (which are similar devices); however, the expertise gained during my Master’s degree in York taught me how to learn new skills and this is turning out to be a big bonus.

PhD research involves a lot of resource/time management skills along with R&D skills. Going through the whole PhD process in York helped me sharpen those skills which are proving key in my current job.
